Chapter 13
August 20, 1980
Jaffar and Abdul had gathered two of their most talented and trusted henchmen, Sameed Al-Farouk and Abbas Balochie. Both men were very familiar with the inner workings of almost any mode of transportation. They could tear down just about any engine, be it from a car, truck or airplane. They could readily diagnose any problem, then turn around and rebuild an engine so it worked flawlessly. Neither possessed a high school diploma, but they were near-geniuses when it came to machines.
Both men studied the documents placed in front of them. After an hour of reading and talking between themselves, Jaffar grew impatient. âWell my friends, do you think that it can be done?â
Both men were well-aware of both Jaffarâs and Abdulâs reputations. They certainly didnât want to disappoint them. Both of them nodded their heads in agreement. âYes! But it will cost many millions.â
âHow much? Give me a number.â
Sameed and Abbas had already made a rough guess. âTen million dollars, maybe twenty million dollars.â
âWhat!?â Jaffar hadnât thought it would cost nearly that much; heâd guessed at about half that amount. âWhy so much?â
âWell, Jaffar, that does include the cost of the plane, the hardware and many other things! If you remember, this Reza was going to ask for many millionsâhundreds of millionsâof dollars.â
âYes, of course,â Jaffar acknowledged, âbut that was for many planes that would be accepted by the Federal Aviation Administration.â
âHow many planes are you needing Jaffar?â
âOne. Just one!â

Jack hadnât had a particularly good day. It had been a scorcher, even by Las Vegas standards, and it had been almost more than he could bear. Heâd spent all morning and part of the afternoon, sitting in his black Camaro doing Captain Nichols a favor. All his undercover officers were either busy on other cases or had just finished extended surveillance. Jack wanted to help Nichols if he could. On several occasions Ken had kept Jack out of trouble when Jack had found it necessary to âbendâ the law.
He was glad heâd had the forethought to pack a cooler with ice and bottled water. In it heâd also put a couple of cucumber sandwiches. They always seemed to cool him down on those really hot days.
Jack had been keeping an eye on a couple of sleaze balls who were apparently involved with distributing drugs that had been smuggled out of Columbia. This was the third time Ken had asked him to work this kind of detail and the fact that he wasnât a cop was an advantage; he was unknown to the local criminal element andâalthough he wasnât allowed to actually make an arrestâhe was capable at take-down and could assist his partner. It kept him busy and paid the bills, plus it reunited him, Don and Ken.
The work with Ken had sparked one night while Donny grilled steaks and Jack and Ken made salad and baked potatoes. As Ken pulled the baked spuds out of the oven, he said to Don and Jack, âWe sure could use a hand with some of our surveillance.
